How Often Should You Retwist?

The General Rule

Most people should retwist their locs every 4-6 weeks. However, the ideal schedule depends on your hair type, loc maturity, and personal preference. Some people with slower hair growth can go 6-8 weeks between retwists.

Signs You Need a Retwist

You need a retwist when you see significant new growth at the roots (usually half an inch or more), your locs are starting to combine at the base, or your overall appearance looks unkempt. Your stylist can help you determine the right timing.

Dangers of Over-Retwisting

Retwisting too frequently (every 2 weeks) can cause thinning at the roots, loc breakage, and permanent damage to your edges. Give your hair time to grow between sessions.

Retwist vs Interlocking

Retwisting involves rolling the new growth in the same direction as the loc. Interlocking involves pulling the loc through the base of the new growth. Interlocking lasts longer between sessions but can cause bumps if done incorrectly.
