How Long Do Box Braids Typically Last?

Box braids generally last between 6 to 8 weeks with proper care. The longevity depends on several factors including your hair type, the size of the braids, how well you maintain them, and your daily activities. Smaller braids tend to last longer than jumbo braids.

Factors That Affect Longevity

Your natural hair growth rate plays a big role — faster growth means more new growth at the roots, making braids look less neat sooner. Sleeping with a satin bonnet or pillowcase helps reduce frizz. Regular moisturizing keeps both your scalp and braids healthy.

When to Take Them Out

Even if your braids still look good, we recommend removing them after 8 weeks maximum. Leaving braids in too long can cause matting, breakage, and buildup at the roots. Your hair needs time to breathe between protective styles.
