How Often Should You Retwist?

The ideal retwist schedule is every 4-6 weeks for most people. However, this varies based on your hair growth rate, loc maturity, and the look you prefer. Some people with slower growth can go 6-8 weeks between retwists. Others with fast-growing hair may need to come in every 3-4 weeks.

New Locs (0-12 Months)

During the first year, your locs are still forming and are fragile. Stick to a 4-week retwist schedule to keep them neat and help them lock properly. Avoid over-manipulating them between appointments. Do not combine retwisting at home — let your loctician handle it to prevent damage.

Mature Locs (12+ Months)

Once your locs have matured, you have more flexibility. Many people extend to every 5-6 weeks. Mature locs hold their shape better and can handle more time between maintenance. Some people with thick, well-established locs go 8 weeks between retwists without any issues.

Signs You Need a Retwist

Look for these signs: half an inch or more of new growth at the roots, locs starting to combine or merge at the base, fuzziness that cannot be tamed with a light product, or an overall unkempt appearance. If you see any of these, it is time to book your retwist.

Retwist vs Interlocking Schedule

If you use the interlocking method instead of palm rolling, you can typically go longer between sessions — 6-8 weeks. Interlocking creates a tighter hold at the root that lasts longer. However, do not interlock more frequently than every 6 weeks, as over-interlocking can thin your locs.
